Molly Grace Talks Inspirations, Tour, and “Mad at Her Forever”

Recently, I had the opportunity to interview Molly Grace, a Nashville-based rising pop star. Known for her powerful voice, witty lyrics, and irresistible charm, Grace has cemented herself as a musical force to be reckoned with. In between shows on the But I’m A Popstar! Tour, I had the chance to talk to her about her inspirations, performing, and her recent releases, “F.E.M.M.E” and “Mad at Her Forever.”

How and when did you first become interested in music? Did anything or anyone make you realize this is what you wanted to do?

It’s funny because when I think back, it’s hard for me to remember a time when I wasn’t interested in music. It’s always been the thing I’ve loved. I come from a family that loves music and has really encouraged me to follow this dream. When I was younger, I idolized Taylor Swift and Hannah Montana and dreamed of pop stardom.

You’re gearing up to release your debut album after having just released the lead single, “Mad at Her Forever.” Can you walk through how that song came to be?

Yes, I am, and I can’t wait! “Mad at Her Forever” is definitely one of my favorite songs off of the album. I wrote it with GAIA, Davin Kingston, and Nick Smith during my first ever writing trip to LA. I told them I wanted to write a disco banger, and they just ran with it. I wrote this song about getting back together with an ex for the plot. Though I can’t in good faith recommend doing that to anyone, it does make for some fun music.

You’re very open about your sexuality in your music, which I especially admire. Were you ever hesitant to be so open when starting your career?

Thank you so much!  It’s taken a while to get here. When I first started releasing music in 2021, I wasn’t even out yet, so it’s crazy to see how much I’ve grown both personally and musically. Sometimes I joke that my music knew I was a lesbian before I did. I was definitely hesitant at first. When I started releasing music about not men, I had just come out and wasn’t really comfortable with myself yet. I feel like my artistry gave me a safe space to explore my sexuality and my expression of my queerness.

The cover art for “F.E.M.M.E” was inspired by the movie But I’m A Cheerleader. Are there other media pieces that have inspired or influenced your music?

Yes! One of my favorite movies! I am really inspired by showgirls and burlesque. That’s been a big theme for my upcoming project!

You’re currently on the But I’m A Popstar! Tour around the Northeast, and the videos I’ve seen make it look so fun. Do you have a favorite song to perform live?

I’m definitely biased, but I think it’s the best time ever! Usually my favorite is “Lady Lady” because that’s when my band gets to do their solos, and it’s just so much fun watching them do their thing. On this tour, though, it has to be “F.E.M.M.E.”. Hearing the audience scream every single word back at me never, ever, ever gets old.

Is performing something that comes naturally to you? Your stage presence is so powerful!

Oh, thank you so much. That’s such a sweet thing to say! I think part of it is a natural love for the stage and hamming it up (LOL,) and part of it is growing up in the performing arts. Theatre, improv, and singing at cover gigs have all prepared me for what I do now.

Do you have any goals for the future of yourself and your music?

In the immediate future, I plan to release my first full-length project and hope to play festivals and open for an artist that I really admire. My big dreams are to headline a festival, host AND perform on SNL, and be a guest judge on Drag Race.
