When I heard that Grace Gardner was teaming up with buffchick for their latest single “Big Picture,” I knew it was going to be good. Both indie singer-songwriters with folk, pop, and rock elements in their music, the pairing immediately made sense. buffchick released their debut album, showtime, earlier this year, and Grace is preparing to release their third EP, After Knowing, in late December.
Following a string of three singles from Gardner, “Big Picture” feels like another chapter that perfectly fits into their story. Having a crush on your friend is a feeling that is so universal, and it hurts even more when they are already with someone else. Gardner stated that the song is about being queer, being “in love with my best friend with no hope of reciprocation,” and the longing that comes with it. They delve into that seemingly desolate feeling, hoping they could travel back to the time before someone else was in the picture–or to even confess their feelings now.
“What if you wanted to cheat on your girlfriend / What if you asked me to buzz you in / Drive a few miles to my place unprompted / Expecting the world at the drop of a pin “
The sonic world of “Big Picture” feels full and inviting. Produced by Gardner themself and longtime collaborator Lonnie Davis, the instrumental is characterized by a soft drum beat and twangy pedal steel. Gardner’s signature harmonies and backing vocals are emphasized by buffchick’s sweet, clear voice; the two of them blending delightfully.
“Big Picture” is the last single from Grace Gardner’s upcoming EP, After Knowing, slated to release next month. Make sure to listen below:
