The Funky and Incredibly Catchy, “Talk” by Fleshed Out

I’ve been in a real funk lately. It’s a cyclical funk, typically falling into it near the end of the summer every year, where I seem to lose interest and motivation for everything. I’m falling behind on reading, catching severe writer’s block, and falling behind on keeping up with the latest song releases. However, while doom scrolling on Instagram the other day, I come across a sneak peak of the music video for “Talk” by a small band by the name of Fleshed Out. Boy, did that 10 second snippet yank me immediately out of that unbearable slump.

“Talk” is one of just two songs Fleshed Out has released this year, and its music video is their very first. This project is incredibly impressive for a band with such a small following. The overall sound of this single is reminiscent of Talking Heads, with clear ’80s synth-pop influences, and it’s irresistibly catchy. Right from the start, the groovy and infectious bassline, paired with sharp yet shimmering synths, sets an upbeat tone. The chorus is the real standout, instantly transporting you back to the ’80s. The overall sound production on this track is flawless.

I’m always a sucker for a great music video to go along with a single release, and Fleshed Out absolutely delivered. Just like their sound, the video’s art direction is steeped in ’80s influences. It creatively switches between digital and film/camcorder footage, presenting the video as a game show, with lead singer Chris Dunn playing the host. The video is delightfully quirky and packed with playful humor, giving off a vibe that’s somewhat reminiscent of Magdalena Bay’s retro-themed music videos.

I truly haven’t come across a song quite this fun and catchy in ages, and I’m beyond grateful to have discovered this gem. Definitely go give Fleshed Out a follow and listen to their small, yet mighty catalogue of songs. I’m thrilled to see more from them in the future.
