Self-love is something that can be hard to come by, but sometimes, all it takes is a song to remember that we should love our bodies for who they are. That is exactly what alt-pop artist Tessa Violet and singer-songwriter Brye have done on their latest track, “My Body’s My Buddy.”
While at first the collaboration was an unexpected duo to me, I soon realized that the two have much more in common than I thought. Both are known for self-positive songs, with Tessa’s “YES MOM” and Brye’s “Diet Culture” both having gone viral on TikTok. The two originally connected over the internet and wrote the song together (along with few others) while Violet was in Nashville earlier this year. In a full circle moment, the song has gained momentum on both TikTok and Instagram Reels pre-release, starting a small trend of users singing the chorus to themselves in the mirror.
The track speaks about how even though it may be hard to love sometimes, our body has been through so many incredible things and is always with us. Personifying the idea of our body into a feminine figure, we are reminded that our body is someone we are always with, no matter what.
From my birth to my grave
With every step I’ve taken my body came
Through the joy and the pain
We dance in the river, we sing in the rain
My body’s my buddy, oh through me and of me
Oh God, what an honor to see her, to know her, to love her
I was immediately struck by the sound of the rubber bridge guitar and was delighted when I learned that Brye produced the track herself. The relative simpleness allows the lyrics to shine through, but there is enough going on sonically that the song does not feel repetitive–quite the opposite in fact. If I ever need to hear the message, I will listen to the song on repeat until I can honestly say that my body is my friend.
