My July favs are here! This month we were graced with new releases from Katie Gavin of MUNA, Clairo, Remi Wolf and more! I’ve included some older features to give you the best moody, eclectic July mix. Whether you’re having a “brat” summer or an “Eliza McLamb screaming in ‘Anything You Want’” summer, this is the playlist for you!
wave – remi wolf
“Wave” is my favourite track from Remi Wolf’s newest LP, Big Ideas. The grungy instrumentation feels reminiscent of early 2000s pop-rock, resulting in the perfect summer headbanger. Best played at full volume, outside!
sailor song – Gigi perez
The highly anticipated “Sailor Song” has been teased since this past spring, and the sapphic ballad was worth the wait. Perez’s minimalistic yet effective production style combines with the vastness of the song, building into a cinematic horn section in the second chorus. If this is any indication of Gigi’s future releases, then I’m ready for more songs and even more Anne Hathaway references.
Next 2 U – kehlani
“Next 2 U” was one of the leading singles from Kehlani’s latest albums, CRASH. Kehlani keeps the listener guessing throughout their current era of kaleidoscopic R&B, with the song seeing three time signature changes in almost as many minutes. The music video further explored the themes of protection heard in the song, with Kehlani showing their support for the Palestinian people amidst the war in Gaza.
the girl, so confusing remix with Lorde – charli xcx
As well as writing one of the most seminal releases of 2024, Lorde and Charli inspire people to reevaluate past friendships by having an honest conversation about girlhood in this collaborative remix. The pop stars both share their perspectives on being well-known in the industry and getting compared to their peers. Do you wish you and someone in your life had “worked it out on the remix?” Girl, so confusing.
