Navigating Heartbreak: A Review of spiderblush’s “Big Deal”

There’s a tender ache that accompanies the realization of investing your heart in someone, only to find them leaving unexpectedly. While you reveled in the warmth of their affection, there’s a hint of regret for trusting in a love that proved fleeting. With it comes moments of subtle angst and subdued sorrow, where even the most comforting words fail to soothe the pain. Perhaps, it’s this lack of closure, this lingering sense of unresolved emotions, that lends such captivating depth to the latest pop record from spiderblush, “Big Deal.”

Released on February 23rd, this three minute acoustic-pop track opens with the words, “It’s okay, I guess…” From there, listeners are drawn into spiderblush’s intimate inner world as she navigates the complexities of love and loss. There’s a palpable vulnerability in her voice, inviting listeners to accompany her on a journey of self-reflection. She courageously questions her own worth, grappling with the pain of abandonment and the bittersweet echoes of what could have been, most notably expressed in her chorus:

“It was you who always wanted to see me
And it was you who said you wanted to be with me
And I’m trying not to make it a big deal
But now I’ve met you and nothing else feels real”

Because breakups often bring feelings of anger, sadness, and confusion, we often overlook the softer ache of disappointment. It can stem from dashed hopes, unfulfilled promises, or the realization that our idealized image of the person we loved didn’t quite align with reality. Regardless of the circumstances, it leaves us not only heartbroken, but also quietly disillusioned. In the moments following a separation, there’s a pause that feels like time is standing still, where emotions swirl and uncertainty hangs heavy in the air. It is in this pause that we enter the space spiderblush effortlessly captures, where we navigate the balance of acceptance and longing, confront the rawness of our emotions, and search for meaning amidst the pain.

Although it might not be the most groundbreaking song, or boast the most innovative lyrics, its true charm lies within the heartfelt performance itself. spiderblush’s voice possesses an ethereal quality: icy, yet delicately fragile, reminiscent of rising pop artist Gracie Abrams, infusing the song with a tender intimacy that resonates deeply. It’s cool and detached, yet at the same time, there is honesty and vulnerability that captivates the listener, inviting them into a space of genuine emotion.
