As artists start to release their first projects in 2024, indie artist Sierra Spirit is breaking into the music sphere with her first ever single “ghost.” Spirit draws from both her cultural background as a Native American from the Otoe-Missouria and Keetoowah Band of Cherokees tribes, as well as her lived experience, focusing on themes including love and loss in her music.
Musically, “ghost” is incredible–the electric bass line builds upon the main electric guitar riff as a simple hi-hat drum beat adds complexity to the start of the second verse. The production by Aaron Taos on his new imprint Howdy Partner Music is moody and emotional, which fans of boygenius, Ethel Cain, and Phoebe Bridgers will enjoy. Lyrically, the single dives into the feeling after a nasty breakup and the residual anger that follows.
“i wrote this song about hating how someone you don’t talk to anymore knows you better than anyone”
— @sierra_spirit on TikTok about “ghost”
“ghost” is accompanied by a music video featuring Sierra Spirit sitting around a fire pit laughing and eating pizza with the ghost of an ex-lover. The music video visuals set a strong tone accompanying the lyrics as light and airy visuals contrast with dark and moody elements. The juxtaposition between the lightness of Spirit’s white dress, white candles, and light and the darkness of the shadows, dense forest, and fire is quite striking.
While “ghost” is Sierra Spirit’s first single, be sure to keep an eye out for her debut EP cointoss, which will be released later this year.
