take yr time – dad sports

Who would have known an Ottawa-based dream pop project named dad sports would come to fruition in just a few short years? Dad sports, now solely under Miguel Plante, has dropped a new single after nearly three years. Right after releasing their last project, I AM JUST A BOY LEAVE ME ALONE !!! in 2021, Plante wrote “take yr time” as a personal reminder that good things take time. It was their little moment of self-care that they could reflect on when they were in a rut. This track celebrates the idea that an individual’s progress is not determined by anyone else but themselves. No one is allowed to set your pace other than you. As said by Plante themselves, “take your time, you’ll be alright.”

The track runs on an electronic soundscape, focusing on vocal distortion to create a bassline and a lead track built using an old keyboard. Listening to this feels like you’re in space with another version of yourself, defying gravity as the world flashes by in lightyears. To me, the song is a perfect mix of midnight dream pop and a summation of deeply held emotions finally spilling out. You can tell this piece is Plante’s personal comfort song with lines like, “take your time / i know that i’ll be fine / even if i’m changing all the time / i know i’ll be alive.” The lyrics are so personal to their story of creating art and the challenges that come with it. Plante better describes it,

“Unplugging from music for the last couple of years has given me time to reflect on why I make music, and for who. The process of creating is so opaque and abstract; it seems hard to feel like you are progressing when you are not always coming out the other side with something to show for it.”

This composition is a complete 180 of dad sports’ previous peppy indie vibe; rather, it’s a fresh chapter of Plante’s musical journey. Supporters of dad sports are itching to hear more with Plante’s bold return. Not to worry, however, because I AM JUST A BOY LEAVE ME ALONE !!! is getting pressed on hot-pink vinyl for the first time, which will include “take yr time” and all previously-released dad sports singles in the B-side. May 10th, mark your calendars!
