Nobody likes friend breakups–they are hard to talk about and never feel quite right. It’s even worse when it’s with a close friend. Whether you are currently going through a friend breakup or know the feeling of having gone through one, indie rock singer-songwriter Hana Eid knows the feeling all too well in her newest single “Avoid the News.”
Hana Eid’s heart-wrenching vocals, rock drum beat that builds into the choruses, and angsty guitar riffs intertwine together in such a way that simply feels like a heart crumbling with love for a dear friend withering and turning into pain. The guitar and drum instrumentals build and decrescendo throughout the song, while also cutting out at a few key moments in the song to allow Eid’s vocals to pierce through.
When going through a friend breakup, or any kind of breakup for that matter, it’s often hard for the memory of someone to disappear immediately. Maybe their favorite song plays on the radio or you drive past their favorite coffee spot, making their memory linger. Hana Eid encapsulates this feeling from her usage of lyrical repetition in “Avoid the News,” specifically seeing their name in books and poetry. I love how she touches on these feelings that are so honest, so human.
i wrote this song about when i was going through a friend-breakup & saw their name in one of my college textbooks during class. & feeling like nowhere was safe!!!!!
