daybreaks’ top albums of 2023

Daybreak takes a look back at the best albums of 2023. We’ve chosen the albums that have made the most significant impact this year. Each album was chosen for its originality, creativity and overall quality. From debut albums to established artists, these albums are a must-listen. These albums have pushed the boundaries and broken new ground in the music industry.

Sunburn // Dominic Fike

The moment I heard the first single release of Dancing in the Courthouse, I knew I was in for a treat. As a long-time fan of Dominic’s previous work, I was excited to see what he had in store for his latest album. And let me tell you, he did not disappoint. Sunburn, the album that followed, is a masterful collection of politically charged hits and introspective musings that showcase Dominic’s continued growth as an artist.

One thing that stands out to me about this album is the unique production style. It takes everything I loved from previous albums and elevates it to a whole new level. The way Dominic blends different genres and styles is truly impressive, and it creates a sound that is both familiar and fresh at the same time.

But what really sets this album apart is the way Dominic shares his thoughts and emotions through his music. He manages to be vulnerable and honest without ever feeling like he’s oversharing. It’s a delicate balance, but Dominic pulls it off beautifully.

As for my favorite tracks, it’s hard to pick just a few. How Much Is Weed? is definitely up there, with its catchy beat and clever lyrics. And of course, Sunburn, the title track, is a standout. It’s a hauntingly beautiful song that stays with you long after it’s over. All in all, this album is a must-listen for any fan of Dominic’s music, or anyone who appreciates thoughtful, well-crafted music.

alchemical 1 // dove cameron

This album feels like an alternate universe. I get goosebumps from nearly every song. Dove has always been a very down to earth person in touch with herself as an emotional person and that shines through in this album in a very sincere way. and, her production feels like a movie soundtrack which makes listening to this album a unique listening experience!

Episode1 // Love by So!YoON!

Honestly, I’m a sucker for Hwang Soyoon’s voice (and her in general). Something about this album just tickles the right spot in my brain, and I could listen to this album on repeat for hours (and I do!). It must be fully listened to, in order, for it to have the desired effect, and everything about it is so perfect to me. I’m so happy I discovered this album this year, and this album will be on my playlist for a long time.

0.1 flaws and all // wave to earth

This was a tough choice. However, I feel that this album parallels amazingly all year round, in every season. It is the perfect balance of vocals and instrumentals. I enjoy the combination of English and Korean lyrics, just rounds out the project to be a piece that I always went back to. Reminds me of humble train rides in Japan..

DATA // Tainy

In more recent years I’ve really leaned into the reggaeton genre and this year was no exception. For Tainy’s new album DATA he has managed to bring in new and past generations of major artists from the genre on this album, including a few additional features from The Maria’s, Four Tet, and Skrillex. Tainy continues to raise the bar and with his decade long career it still feels as if he’s only touching the surface.

Favorites: Sci-Fi, manaña, 11 y once, PARANORMAL

The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess // Chappell Roan

Chappell Roan’s long-awaited debut is everything I could’ve asked for and more. Working on the album with Grammy-award winning songwriter and producer Dan Nigro for the last 3 years, Roan ended up with a perfect pop package. From soft, vulnerable ballads to indie pop jams to confident hyper-pop club tracks, the 14 songs take you through a journey of Chappell Roan finding herself.
