separate ways – eyedress ft. the marías

If there’s a particular genre of music I truly devour, it is cosmic-sounding heartbreak songs. I have a deep affection for soulful guitar riffs, twinkling keys and synths, and heart-wrenching lyrics. Finding musical satisfaction in this musical niche has been elusive lately, but Eyedress and The Marías exceeded my expectations with their collaborative single, “Separate Ways.”

Eyedress’s crooning voice harmonizes perfectly with The Marías’ wistful vocals in this heartbreaking track. This is truly one of the best collaborations I’ve listened to as of late; the way they riff off of one another in a conversational tone throughout the song works so well. The song details two lovers quite literally going their separate ways because of things not going well in the relationship. However, the back and forth between Eyedress and The Marías personify a very realistic inner conversation between these two lovers after parting ways. Their thoughts about the whole process, just out sung into an echo chamber.

I cannot get enough of the production of this track. The instrumentation pairs with the lyrics almost way too well. I feel as if I am also going through a breakup just listening to this song. It’s so soft and dreamy with a hint of nostalgia. The synth and keys seem to levitate you as a listener, while the bass and guitar just wave right by. Slight maracas in the background add to the groove, and it all just comes together post-chorus. The perfect final touch is closing and fading out with the sound of a distant thunderstorm. From start to finish, this song feels like a good cry over heartbreak, and then you descend into sleep as it rains in the background.
