Almost exactly 3 years after releasing her debut EP, Word of Art, Caity Krone has returned with the emotionally driven single, “Villain.” As someone who has followed her photography work over the past few years, I am in awe of how her photos can capture a specific feeling, and this song has the same effect.
Starting with just a soft guitar and atmospheric sound effects, Krone’s vocals are immediately highlighted. While the production builds, a story is starting to be told.
“So don’t try to call me now, I don’t want to hear it / Because my world is made of heroes and villains“
Caity Krone has described this song as being about “the way that women can wound each other so deeply, how things that seem subtle can cut so deep.” Female friendships, especially those in girlhood, can define the next many years of your life. The “breakup” hurts even more when everybody around you seems to talk about and admire them. Krone seems to capture that experience perfectly.
“it hurts sometimes, watch you play so nice / when everybody loves you, you can’t be a villain to me“
The song is accompanied by a beautiful video directed by Genevieve Andrews, who has previously worked with the likes of Billie Eillish and V-Files. Gorgeously representing the power of female friendship, both the aesthetics and story are elegantly showed. And because of course she did, Krone colored and edited the single art herself.
Her long awaited comeback did not disappoint, and I am very excited for this new chapter of her musical journey. I look forward to all of the art she will create in the future and for her to get the recognition she so truly deserves.
