FIZZ- New Band, Familiar Faces

What do you get when you combine 4 of the UK and Ireland’s most talented musicians? A killer indie pop band! FIZZ is a newly formed supergroup consisting of Martin Luke Brown, Greta Isaac, Orla Gartland, and dodie! Their album Secret to Life is on its way, and they have given us four smash singles along the way. Each song breathes new life to the familiar sounds associated with these artists.

“High In Brighton” was the first of the four singles to be released and gives us a glimpse into the up-beat, funky fun that will surely be the mark of this band. It begins with a lovely slow build, packed with a sense of urgency that accompanies the readiness to embark on a new journey and leads us straight to the action via the chorus. This song is all about escaping the mundane in search of new endeavors (and also about wanting to be high in Brighton).

Following the first single, “Hell Of A Ride” is one of their grungier songs and is hopefully just a taste of what is to come from this band. This song is simply about life. It’s overwhelming, fast-paced, intense, and emphasizes the need we all have to live it well while we still can.

The world is on fire, so baby pass me a lighter, ‘cause I’m 25, goin’ on 45, goin’ on 99, goin’ on dead

“Close One,” their third single, expands on the wide range of sounds and emotions this band is slowly proving they are capable of providing to listeners. Lead mostly by Orla Gartland, this song has a beautiful sense of relaxed regret. To want to be with someone and have to accept that it isn’t right for either of you never felt so peaceful and strained at the same time.

We were really going through it, guess we dodged another bullet. We know, that we’re happier

One thing I love about FIZZ so far is that it seems they take turns on what songs are led by which member (very boygenius-esque). Additionally, the colors/abstract imagery associated with the band’s brand is a trip we are all going to have fun taking.

Lastly, they released “Good As It Gets,” which delves into the feelings that accompany the relationship many people have with our understanding of love and physical intimacy. If it boils down to sex and sex appeal, why are we still left wanting so much more? This track keeps an incredible balance of angst and somber thoughts, giving way to a wonderful build where we get to hear Orla scream-sing the song’s title, “is this as good as it gets?”

Individually, each of these artists are a force to be reckoned with. However, the combination of all four talented members is going to be a game changer for their fans. I think FIZZ is going to be an incredible chance for each member to explore new sounds, styles, and opportunities. They have already begun touring in London and Ireland and have amassed a decent following for a brand new band, thanks to the combination of their fan bases.

A band that exemplifies fun, friendship, and life in its fullest form, FIZZ is going to be one to watch.

Blink twice, you’ll miss the highlights. God, it’s a hell of a ride goin’ on dead
