BONVOYAGE – Dreamcatcher

Taking you on a dream-like journey, Dreamcatcher gives you a special “BONVOYAGE” with their new EP [Apocalypse: From Us]. The main track, “BONVOYAGE,” is a fresh take on their unique sound that branches out from their previous releases and more closely resembles one of their older classics, “Deja Vu.”

Dreamcatcher has a fascinating story as a K-pop group because they first debuted as a cutesy girl group, MINX, and within the next two years, they did a complete 180 into a rock/horror group. They did something nobody else did at the time for girl groups in K-pop. Instead of making light and fluffy music, their production focused solely on using hard rock and mysterious instrumentals.

“BONVOYAGE” is no different, as it maintains its statement choruses, emotional lyricism, dramatic dynamic changes, and beautiful choreography. The song is the personification of a battle within yourself trying to figure out whether a relationship is beneficial. Just like the song’s instrumental, the lyrics mirror a push-and-pull seesaw effect of should I stay or go. In the end, as the title suggests, they ask the person to wish them well on their journey as they choose to go.

Lyrically, the second verse is my favorite because it conveys the deepest pain of deciding what to do.

“If we get too close, we might get farther apart / We may unknowingly hurt each other’s growing heart / Because I have my selfish past / And yet, I draw a future with you”

Of course, as this is an English translation, we can’t fully understand the original meaning. Still, I love how seamlessly these lines portray the push-and-pull effect of wanting something so wrong but knowing it might not be right for you.

Aside from the music, the intricate choreographies accompanying the music sets new releases in K-pop apart. Tracks like this one are art pieces in and of themselves when viewed with audio and visual components. Dreamcatcher has an electric stage presence that makes it clear to anyone watching that they enjoy their work.

A vital point of the choreography that is addictive and replays in my mind whenever I hear the song happens during the pre-chorus when they sing, “maybe you don’t, but I love you.” The hand movements are the sign language letters for I, L, and Y, and the girls drag each letter across their faces as if it’s a fleeting feeling. It makes the choreography reflect the journey of the song.

“BONVOYAGE” is a classic Dreamcatcher-type release that could catapult you into their incredible world of lore. Any music video of theirs that you watch is sure to leave you wanting more. Be sure to check out “BONVOYAGE” and the rest of the album, and keep an eye out for future releases from the group!
