April showers bring May flowers, but they also bring a blooming array of new music. I was especially lucky since a few of my favorite artists decided to bless me with new songs. To me, April is a time where change occurs at a pace that feels hard to comprehend, and sometimes you just need some music to give you that space to feel it all out. Maybe it’s because my birthday is this month and aging feels like another thing to conquer. Or maybe it’s like a new song where you need to let it play through to the end to really see the full picture. Or I’m just dramatic. You can pick. I composed a list below of some of my favorites that have recently come out that I can’t wait for you to hear. Don’t forget to check out our Spotify playlist for the full list.

Sad to Breathe – The Japanese House

I have been playing this song nonstop—no exaggeration. The chorus loops and I get a chance to sing along and bop my head. I have been a fan of The Japanese House for a while now, so getting a chance to listen to new music from them gets me giddy. The intro is slow and leaves you breadcrumbs of what’s to come with the simple piano chords and builds to this upbeat, yet sad confession of their ending relationship. The juxtaposition of the song lyrics and the instrumentation is what makes me love it more.

One That Got Away – MUNA

I’m biased—so I’ll just get that out of the way now. MUNA is my favorite band. They have been since 2016, and they can do no wrong. Their new single is a banger that you will want to lip sync in your car imagining your singing to your heartbroken ex. Naomi shared that they were influenced by Janet Jackson in regards to the production of this song. You can especially hear it in the bass line and their magical synths. If you listen really closely, you can hear Janet say, “MUNA if you nasty”.

4EVA – KAYTRAMINÉ, Kaytranada, Aminé, Pharrell

Do I really need to go into detail about how great this song is? It’s Kaytranada and Aminé. Kaytranada’s production is super groovy, and this single is destined to be the soundtrack of summer. Aminé’s flow is clever and smooth, saying it best, “this KAYTRAMINÉ, we don’t need no DJ.”

Tangos De Una Moto Trucada – Ralphie Choo, Drummie

I saw a snippet of Ralphie Choo’s performance for Colors Studios on my explore page and within those five seconds, I was hooked. The flamenco influence, his mellow vocals, and the production from Drummie makes me do a little dancey-dance like Choo does.

Out of Me – Donna Missal

Donna Missal has gone in a new direction with her sound. Missal possessed an edgy, rock-influenced sound at the beginning of her career, but now she seems to be moving towards a pop-synth inspired direction. Don’t worry, you still get Missal’s powerful ballads–but just add layered synths, and you’ve got this hit.

Strawberry Soju – Jesse Barrera, Albert Posis, Michael Carreon

Who doesn’t love strawberry soju? This funky, R&B song is one that leaves you with that stank face because it’s so good. I found this song through TikTok, and it made me love my algorithm even more. You won’t look at strawberry soju the same.

Replay – Cub Sport

I want this played at every club that I don’t go to since I’m a homebody. If on the off chance I do go out, though, I want this played. I want to feel entranced and covered in glitter like this song makes me feel. Even though it’s about how hard moving on can be, this song ends with an extremely cathartic feeling.

The Feels – Labrinth

You can hear Labrinth’s signature gospel keys and his harmonizing vocals and just know he’s captured something enchanting. This song is layered with so many little pieces of Labrinth being played you’d need a microscope to be able to dissect them all. He even leaves you a gift of Zendaya featuring on this song. If you really wanna treat yourself, Google his Coachella performance. You’re welcome.

SPACE AGE COUNTRY GIRL – Agnes Hartwich

For fans of Billie Eillish, K.Flay, and Tove Lo, you definitely cannot sleep on Agnes Hartwich. Hailing from Denmark, Hartwich is a self-proclaimed “sad-grunge-tumblr-girl from 2014, but 9 years later,” and…
