Girl Groups to Check Out This Spring

Girls Generation, Destiny’s Child, Fifth Harmony, 2NE1, The Spice Girls.

You haven’t lived in the modern world if you haven’t heard a song by an iconic girl group. Even though Blackpink might be a new name in the mouths of music enjoyers, girl groups have been around and popular since The Andrew Sisters in the 30s and 40s and Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles in the 60s. The girl groups that you might know often sing in English, but there are many groups around the world that are making their mark on the music industry. This spring here are some groups of women making music that you should check out.

Fromis_9

Starting with one of my personal favorite groups to listen to during the springtime, fromis_9 is a 9-member girl group based in South Korea. Debuting in 2017 they have had 5 years to grow and change their sound. If you enjoy an upbeat, bubblegum pop type sound, their earlier songs such as “LOVE BOMB” and “FUN!” will be right up your alley. More recently they have matured with their music. Songs like “Rewind” and “Escape Room” gave them a chance to show their range. Since it is springtime though, here are some of their songs that remind me of spring:

  1. Weather
  2. Hush Hush
  3. Airplane Mode
  4. COLORING
  5. Glass Shoes

Girls2

They will make you either want to blow bubbles or dance in a flower field, Girls2 has an upbeat and electric concept. They are an 8-member performance-based girl group out of Japan. If you are looking for a group to brighten up your spring and summer playlist, their songs are sure to do it! If you want to see their art visually, their choreography is equally as bright and cute.

Songs you should check out:

  1. Countdown
  2. Love Genic
  3. 80s Lover
  4. チュワパネ (Chuwapane!)
  5. Bye-Bye-Bye

The Aces

When you have nothing else to do, start a band with your sister and closest friends. The Aces are a 4 member alternative indie pop band from Utah centered around the vocal stylings of Cristal Ramirez, the lead singer. With honest and down-to-earth lyrics, a sound that makes you want to drive with the windows down, and many LGBTQ+ narratives, these women bring an edge to your springtime mix. They’ve been a band since 2008 so if you’re looking for songs to listen to this spring I suggest:

  1. Daydream
  2. I Always Get This Way
  3. Volcanic Love
  4. Girls Make Me Wanna Die
  5. Lovin Is Bible

Bella Dose

Powerful women are fearless women. That’s what Bella Dose offers us. If you’re looking for something a little different, perhaps vampire cheerleaders or music that speaks to cool colors, this is the group for you. Bella Dose is the first bilingual Latin girl group and they bring the heat in every language. With influences from many Latin countries embedded in their music and style, there’s something for everyone in their discography.

Check out:

  1. She
  2. BITE
  3. Luna
  4. Talk Too Much
  5. Boom Boom

4EVE

Next is 4EVE, a 7-member group from Thailand. These women do it all from holding teddy bears to bows and arrows, from pastels to black leather. If you’re looking for an emotional ballad, listen to “Tears”. If you want something cute and bouncy, listen to “LESS IS MORE”.  Something hard-hitting and a good dance track? Listen to “Jackpot.” And, while you’re at it check out their music videos. But, if you’re just there for the music here are my recommendations:

  1. Jackpot
  2. Tears
  3. Exceptional
  4. LESS IS MORE
  5. Trick or Treat

LE SSERAFIM

Being fearless only takes 5 people, powerful choreography, a great stylist, and an attitude for breaking barriers. LE SSERAFIM is a group of 5 women from 3 different countries (Korea, Japan, and the US) who were interconnected even before they debuted last year. Whether you want a song to walk down the imaginary catwalk to, something to scream at the top of your lungs, or cool, calm, and collected tunes to bring you back to earth they have messages of confidence, healing, and independence.

Must listens include:

  1. Blue Flame
  2. FEARLESS
  3. ANTIFRAGILE
  4. Impurities
  5. UNFORGIVEN

FLO

It may not be their job “to make you feel comfortable” but they get the job done when it comes to beautiful R&B and soul. These three powerhouse women have runs that will blow you away and depth you’ll want to dive deeper with every listen. If they don’t seduce you with their voices don’t worry they’re performers too and they’ll make an instant fan out of you that way. There’s no doubt you’ll walk away jaw on the floor impressed. Some songs to check out:

  1. Not My Job
  2. Fly Girl
  3. Feature Me
  4. Cardboard Box
  5. Losing You

XG

Ladiessssssss XG. Hey, hi, how you do? 7 women who will cry at their own party and not even worry about it. A newer Japanese girl group based in South Korea, this group has taken the world by storm lately with their statement title tracks and stage presence. Because they are a global group, they sing mostly in English and are influenced heavily by hip hop, r&b, and pop. Their discography isn’t extensive so the songs to listen to are:

  1. MASCARA
  2. Shooting Star
  3. Tippy Toes
  4. LEFT RIGHT
