sweetly – jake brewer

New York based singer-songwriter Jake Brewer has spread his wings even further this year. At only 22 years-old, he has released an album, Boys Do Cry, and an EP, What Love Did to Me. In addition to music, Brewer is a founder of FRNDLY media, a host of a podcast, and a recent TedX speaker. What can’t he do?

His latest single, “Sweetly,” released on April 14, embodies alternative pop. I could definitely see this in a coming of age show. The song is melancholic all the way through with the use of minor chord progressions; prominent notes of guitar and indie-influenced drums fit perfectly with Brewer’s soft vocals. His voice is mellow, but is emotionally in tune giving me a taste of Conan Gray. The rock touches during the bridge complements the introduction of heavier bass and guitar reverb that reflects in the lyrics like, tell you that I love you until it ends.”

I didn’t wanna love again / But now we’re slow dancing

Love is a promise I’ll keep

These lyrics unfold the “fall” of finding love unexpectedly, but in the midst of it, it take holds of you. In the end, you accept it and put your everything into it. There is an internal battle of “wanting to,” but holding back knowing the ups and downs of that cycle that messes with your head. Love is a tricky thing, and this song captures the heaviness of it all.

Brewer’s first project of 2023 is already making us excited for what’s to come. He will be playing a special release set in partnership with Empire State Music & Arts at the Sultan Room in New York City on April 23.

Stay tuned for Jake Brewer’s new music later this year; but for now, keep jamming to “Sweetly.”
