Dallas artist Juliana Madrid’s latest release, ‘Afterlife,’ encapsulates whimsy pop existentialism. Her approach to crafting her sound is similar to label-mates; Christine and the Queens, Charlie XCX, and Tove Lo, to name but a few. Juliana’s sound is undoubtedly inspired by those who have come before her, but her individualistic approach to making music results in unique conversational lyrics:
“Time, I’ve seen your soft side / But when my eyes shut, you hard cut / To scenes where I don’t know my lines.”
When I hear ‘Afterlife,’ I am reminded that most people grapple with how little time we all have. However, Madrid speaks my feelings succinctly, ‘Everything will be ok.’ She shared her thoughts on this below:
“In ‘Afterlife,’ I am sort of flirting with the universe, hoping to get more time. I’m often living in my own head, so I tend to get into these ruts where it feels like I’ve been putting my energy towards the wrong thing or not working hard enough, or not using my time to my best advantage. Throughout the song, I attempt to understand these thoughts and try my best to find a middle ground with my own fears.”
