radiohead – nightly

Nightly (with enthusiasm)!! This Nashville-based alternative pop band consists of members Johnathan Capeci, Joey Beretta, and Nicholas Sainato. Popular songs like “the movies” and “Twenty Something” show vulnerability in love and in life and breaks down the complexities of relationships. In an interview, Capeci said one of his “favorite things to do is [drive] home and [play] the demo of a new song.” Just like their Spotify bio says, nightly’s songs are ones you to drive to.

Their latest release, “radiohead,” is the band’s first track of 2023 following “i wish you loved me” and “dirty white chucks” in 2022. This tender ballad tells the story of someone longing for the person they cannot have, longing for togetherness in simple acts of affection through lyrics like “awake in my bed // touching my hair // singing Radiohead.” It is the lust-driven reminders of a person in mundane parts of routine.

A couple of us at Daybreak shared our thoughts on “radiohead.”

“Yeah I think of you // Awake in my bed // Touching my hair // Singing Radiohead // And I’d say forever // But that feels too soon // For me to ever not be close to you // Ooh, it’s you”

Rachel: nightly is one of those artists that made up my 2020 “sad songs” playlist. They truly understand how to capture powerful emotion in softness. Capeci’s airy vocals know how to reach into the deepest parts of you. On a personal level, “radiohead” is everything I need right now. I don’t even know how to explain the level of emotions I experience when I listen to this song, at a borderline damaging volume by the way. It literally kills me—the chorus speaks for itself while burning a hole in my heart.

Julia: I’m new to nightly. This was the first song of theirs I’ve heard, and it has a hold over me. I have played this song too many times to count. This song isn’t overly complex lyrically or with its sound – it grasps that tender sweet spot. The intro reminds me of all the heartbreak scenes from all the rom-com movies that were out from the late 90s to early 2000s. “Touching my hair singing Radiohead” is a lyric that won’t leave me. I hope one day you’re as lucky as I was to have listened to this while it was a rainy day in NYC walking to my train stop.

Situations this song applies to are: crying (af), daydreaming about a crush, driving home after a breakup, looking out the window of the subway while it’s raining.

Stay tuned for the band’s upcoming sophomore album releasing later this year, but in the meantime listen to their debut album, “night, love you.”
