oh fleabag – a playlist deep dive

One of the greatest shows broadcasted on television. I’m right, don’t fight it. As easy as it is to enjoy her quick wit and all-knowing glances while breaking the fourth wall, Fleabag is someone who is grieving. Grieving for her mother, her best friend, and herself. Grieving but also which is important to note, growing. If you’re feeling like Fleabag, take a listen. I will leave you with this quote from one of the greatest scenes in the whole show (yes – it’s about menopause but also it’s not).

“It’s horrendous but then it’s magnificent.”

When you listen to these clips for the ones without dialogue I suggest you mute the episode and play the song it’s assigned to below.

Happy watching.

Season 1 Ep 4: 25:10 “Something Has To Change”– The Japanese House

At this point in the show I think the lyrics to this song really resonate. Fleabag is in the midst of hurting herself and making the same choices – repeating the cycle. We’ve all been there.

Season 1 Ep 5: 15:10 “Liability (Reprise)” – Lorde

This scene doesn’t have music but I think this song fits right at the moment when Fleabag thinks back to a memory she has with her best friend. Lorde really knows where it hurts.

Season 2 Ep 6: 25:00 “Cloudbusting” – Kate Bush

I think the current song choice is incredible for the last scene of Fleabag. Period. But….if they ever decided to go in the upbeat pop direction I would play this. A little Bush to give you that small shade of light.

SPOILER ALERT

I decided to make a playlist dedicated to Fleabag because I thought it would be fun creatively for me to see what tracks I would choose if I were the music supervisor.

However, that’s not the only reason. I wanted you, the reader, to have a reason to watch the show. The show is insanely funny –  PWB is a genius, but more importantly Fleabag is a flawed person. You can simultaneously root for her while also yelling at your screen because she keeps making the same mistakes.

It’s painful, embarrassing, and genuine. Sometimes it’s important for shows to mirror behaviors we are shameful of so we can learn from it and even laugh about it. It’s okay if you’re Fleabag right now or if a year ago you were. In the end, Fleabag is all of us in some way at some point in our nonlinear way of life. So press play.
